Year 4 Newsletter

Welcome to Year 4

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome all children back to school and into our year 4 bubble.

We understand that children can sometimes feel worried and apprehensive about starting in another class so if you have any concerns and wish to speak to us, please call or email the office so we can arrange a convenient time to speak.

This newsletter gives you an outline of what your child is doing at school throughout the Autumn Term and how you can help them.

Staff in Year 4

Our teaching team in year 4 is Miss Stainton and Mr Huntley. We would also like to welcome Mrs Marshall to Bardney Primary School, who will be working in year 4 on a Thursday and Friday.

Curriculum Overview

Geography

Our geography focus this term is ‘Around the World’. We will be learning about different locations around the world and their varying climates. We will discover how to navigate the world using lines of longitude and latitude, as well as find out about the different time zones across the world.

Art

This half term the children will be focussing on painting. The children will be learning about primary and secondary colours. They will be trying out techniques such as colour washing and colour blocking and learning about different artists.

English

In English, we will be focusing on creative writing, in particular writing a descriptive story opening and a description of a historical setting. We will also be revisiting our knowledge of SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar).

Maths

Our maths focus this term will be, “Place Value.” Some of our objectives will focus on: counting in 1000s, rounding the nearest 10,100 and 1000, negative numbers and ordering and comparing numbers, just to name a few!

P.E

PE will take place every Wednesday with the specialist Synergy P.E coach. The children will need to have their PE kit in school on those days. All kit should be named clearly. Please also ensure that the children have appropriate PE kits, including footwear, for both indoor and outdoor PE.

Children will now be going home in their P.E kits on Wednesday. This is in order to fit with the staggered home times and to allow for P.E kits to be washed and then returned to school.

Reading

Please continue to support your child’s reading at home. Each time your child reads at home and this is recorded in their home/school diary, they will receive a signature.

 
   

 

 

 We will be changing books once a week on a Tuesday. This ensures books have sufficient time be quarantined before they are re-issued the following week. Some children may receive more than one reading book per week to ensure they have enough reading material to last over the week.

 

Microsoft Teams

If our class bubble or individual children are unable to attend school, we will be using ‘Microsoft Teams’ to share work online. Log-ins, to allow you to access this from home, will be sent out in the following weeks.

We will also be loading up the weekly maths or English homework, as well as the termly project homework, onto Microsoft Teams.

 

If you are unable to access this for any reason or have any problems, please let us know.

 

Project Homework

Every half-term, we will be setting project homework. This homework is designed to give the children ownership of their own learning, whilst also working within the boundaries of the National Curriculum. Ideally, your child should dedicate approximately 30-45 minutes each week in order to create amazing masterpieces that they can be proud of. The hand in for this project homework is: Monday 19th October.

Project homework (photos, powerpoints, etc) can be handed in by uploading it onto Microsoft Teams, at any point during this half term.

 

Spellings

Spellings will be given out every week. Your child will receive opportunities throughout the week to practise them.

 

There will also be ‘statutory spellings for year 3/4' and a ‘spelling menu uploaded onto Microsoft Teams for children to practice throughout the year.

 

Times Table Rockstars

We will be using Times Table Rockstars to help build on the children’s skills. A daily 3-minute activity will be conducted in class to support their quick recall of times tables facts up to 12x12. This can be supported at home by encouraging your child to practice their multiplication facts on the Times Table Rockstars App.

The log-in details for the TT Rock Stars App/website can be found in the back of their home/school diaries.

 
   

 

 

 Well-being

Supporting the children’s well-being is an important focus for us this year. We have been doing different activities to support this in class, such as our daily ‘Mindful Moments’.

 

At Bardney we are passionate about supporting every aspect of children’s wellbeing. In some situations, children need a little extra help with social skills such as turn taking, making good friendship choices and confidence. If you see this stamp in your child’s reading record it means they have received that kind of support in a small group that day. If you have any worries about this, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher or speak to Mrs Smith, our Family Support Worker.
